Glass fiber batts are the most popular type of insulation for wall cavities, but can be used as attic, roof and floor insulation. The batts are installed between framing members and are held in place by the facing being stapled to the framing or by friction. They are easy to install, have a high R-Value and are low in cost. Thermal Resistance, abbreviated R, is the effectiveness of a building assembly to resist the conduction of heat. The higher the R-Value, the higher the insulating value.
Loose fill glass fiber can be used in attic floors because it is inexpensive and leaves few voids or gaps between pieces. The material is blown in to place using a motorized hopper and long hose. It is commonly used to retrofit the walls of un-insulated houses by blowing it through holes in the wall. With a low cost, ease of installation and fairly high R-value, loose fill is commonly used.
Spray foam insulation provides very high R-values, but can be more expensive to install. Spray foam is good for structures that are hard to insulate by conventional means. At the time of spraying, the components are dense liquids, but react immediately once sprayed. The foam expands, fills voids and seals against air leakage. The excess is trimmed using a special power saw.
Rigid board insulation is used where a high R-value is required and insulation is needed to support another material. Commonly used in some roof assemblies, walls or ceilings and for super insulated walls. Some rigid board insulation types are water resistant and can be used below grade. Areas where termites are common have a code requirement for an insect proof break such as flashing.
